In a consistently changing workplace, the need for mentorship increases. It helps us adapt, learn and grow as we face this continually changing landscape. Amanda Bodden of Premier and Amanda Coleman of McKesson have valuable testimonials of why mentorship matters in the workplace, both from a mentor and mentee perspective.
Why I Mentor
I chose to become a mentor because I wanted to challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone—and in doing so, I discovered a new level of confidence and a side of myself I hadn’t seen before. Mentoring can feel intimidating at first; it’s easy to question whether you’re truly qualified. I certainly did. But leading my first mentor circle this past spring with PWH proved that I was more than capable—and that experience has since become one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and mentoring is now something I genuinely love to do.
My Mentor Changed My Life
When I made the leap into a new career path and joined McKesson Medical-Surgical, I knew the transition would be challenging. As a career switcher, I was stepping into unfamiliar territory, and the learning curve felt steep. But joining PWH nearly three years ago turned out to be one of the most pivotal decisions of my professional journey—largely because of the incredible mentorship I received from Jessica Carney of Premier, through the mentoring program.
Jessica has been more than a mentor-she’s been a guide, a cheerleader, and a source of unwavering support. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to step outside of my comfort zone and embrace opportunities I never imagined myself pursuing. With her guidance, I took on the role of Mentor Circle Leader, where I had the privilege of supporting others on their own journeys. Mentor Circles is a PWH group mentoring program that enables professionals at all levels to come together to discuss and share knowledge on a topic. Most recently, I had the honor of introducing the closing keynote speaker at the 2025 PWH Leadership Conference—an experience that was both humbling and empowering.
Mentorship within PWH is more than just a program—it’s a reflection of our culture. It fosters growth, builds confidence, and creates a ripple effect of empowerment across our industry. Through mentorship, we not only support individual development but also strengthen the collective impact of women in healthcare.
Jessica’s mentorship changed my life, and I’m proud to pay it forward. That’s the power of mentoring.
Final Thoughts
Mentorship is crucial for our career development. It helps us aid others around us, while empowering ourselves as well. It provides support, guidance and inspiration to achieve our goals.
